First Suppers

First Suppers is our weekly community meal. We provide a free, nutritious meal to our neighbors every Thursday night. In the past two years, we have served over 3000 meals to people of all ages and backgrounds. In May of 2016, we invited St. Thomas More Catholic Parish to use our facilities to distribute light dinners and sack lunches on Friday nights.

First Lutheran is a member of Common Table, a coalition of area churches working to organize free community meals and assistance for neighbors in need. Currently, a meal is offered almost every day of the week. The schedule is available here.

Patchwork Ministry

Our Patchwork Ministry collects clothing, shoes, hygiene, and cleaning supplies to support the USD 383 FIT Closet and Clothing Exchange, a free program run by the local school district to aid families at or below the poverty level in the area. Volunteers from FLC and other groups around Manhattan collect, wash, sort, and hand out these items to families in need.

Because of generous contribution by members and friends in the past month, First Lutheran has delivered close to $1000 worth of clothing, shoes, personal hygiene items, and cleaning supplies for distribution through the FIT Closet. The photo on the right shows just a small portion of what FLC and other churches in Manhattan are doing to help our neighbors.

Crafting Ministries

God gives us each gifts, according to His will. Some can sing, some can teach, and some can work wonders with their hands. Both the Prayer Shawl Ministry and the Quilters create beautiful pieces to give to someone who might need tangible evidence of God's love.

Our prayer shawls and quilts are handmade and given to anyone who might need one; the ministry groups donate pieces to Good Shepherd Hospice House, the Emergency Shelter, nursing homes, and various groups throughout the community. Every newly baptized child in our congregation receives both a quilt and a prayer shawl as an expression of joy and thanksgiving for new life in Christ.

Food Pantry

The Food Pantry at First Lutheran serves upwards of 450 families each year. Generous contributions of food from the Flint Hills Breadbasket and First Lutheran members and friends allow us to make a real difference in the lives of our neighbors. The pantry is open on Wednesday afternoons for patrons referred to us by the Breadbasket. In addition to food staples, First Lutheran strives to provide much needed personal hygiene items not available from Breadbasket. Prayer support and donations are appreciated, and new volunteers are always welcome. Check with the office to see how you can get involved!
